Windows VR Doesn't Require a Beefy PC . . . So Far
We know that a bunch of manufacturers like HP, Dell and Lenovo are making $300 Windows VR headsets, but what kind of hardware juice will it require to power them up properly?
Our first hint comes from the Windows Holographic First Run application found in the most recent Windows Insider build. According to the application, Windows VR will need at the minimum 4GB of RAM, DirectX 12 graphics card, USB 3.0 support, and a four core CPU.
As you can tell, the system specifications are vague as they can be, although at the very least, it seems Windows Holographic will run on a mid-range PC just fine. For VR though, more detail on the actual CPU and GPU speed is required, which we can safely assume will not be anywhere near the low-end range.
In comparison, both Oculus Rift [pictured here] and HTC Vive require a quad-core Intel i5 processor, a NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD R9 290, USB 3.0 support and at least 4GB of RAM.
It seems like Microsoft is aiming to keep the barrier of entry to VR as low as possible, hence you have the $300 VR headsets which is a reasonable price compared to $500+ for Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.
The Windows VR will be even cheaper than the PlayStation VR which requires some addition hardware purchases for optimal play on top of its $399 price tag. Here's hoping Microsoft details the system requirements soon enough and keeps it truly accessible for mass market adoption.
