Biz Stone, one of Twitter's four co-founders, announced Tuesday he's returning to the social media company after a 6-year absence. Stone [pictured above] had worked on other projects, including founding Jelly, "a human-powered search and discovery engine," which was acquired by Pinterest in March.

"My top focus will be to guide the company culture, that energy, that feeling," Stone wrote in a Medium post. "It's important that everyone understands the whole story of Twitter and each of our roles in that story."

Stone said he will be "filling the 'Biz-shaped hole'" he left at Twitter.

"You might even say the job description includes being Biz Stone," he added.

Stone said he was going to take a "really sweet gig" elsewhere but Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey persuaded him to come back after a company town hall event.

"When I stood next to Jack addressing the crowd of employees, I felt the energy, and I was overcome with emotion," Stone wrote in his post. "I realized in that moment that Twitter was the most important work of my life."

Dorsey posted that he was "excited to have Biz's energy and heart back at Twitter" in a tweet Tuesday. Dorsey is also running Square, a financial services and merchant services aggregator and mobile payment company

San Francisco-based Twitter was founded in 2006 and has 313 million active users, according to its website.

Last month, Ev Williams, another Twitter co-founder, announced plans to sell as much as 30 percent of his stake in the company to fund other investments, but remains a member of its board.

Chief Operating Officer Adam Bain left last year, while Chief Technology Officer Adam Messinger and product gurus Noah Pepper and Jinen Kamdar left before that.

The fourth Twitter co-founder, Noah Glass, is CEO of Olo, a mobile and online food ordering platform for restaurants.

"It's important that everyone understands the whole story of Twitter and each of our roles in that story," Stone wrote Tuesday. "I'll shape the experience internally so it's also felt outside the company."
