The Toshiba P105-S6084 notebook PC, a new entrant to the Satellite portable line, is packed with most of the hardware a multimedia laptop should have and some components that don't quite measure up. But if you're looking for a well-balanced notebook with more than enough memory, as well as biometric security and a big, bright LCD, you will certainly get one with this model -- and for a reasonable price.
Look and Feel
The 17-inch widescreen LCD looms over a well-designed silver and black clamshell interior. The full-size keyboard is laid out well and has a solid feel.
Any large-screen portable tends to be a bit awkward to lug around from place to
place. Still, this model is worth a little extra time in the gym. It measures 15.5 x 10.8 x 1.6 and weighs 7.1 pounds.
Features
We would have preferred to find more standard-fare software bundled with this notebook. Toshiba includes Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, InterVideo WinDVD 5, and Sonic Solutions PrimeTime -- not exactly conventional choices.
What Toshiba does include is an external, detachable TV tuner that you can leave behind if you want to make the overall package lighter. Media mavens are saved the inconvenience and expense of having to locate and buy a tuner on their own. Toshiba throws in a Windows XP Media Center 2005 edition remote, too.
The LCD with TruBrite technology produces a maximum resolution of 1,440 x 900 pixels, which is becoming the industry standard for the better-equipped portable computers. The P105-S6084 comes with a 5-in-1 bridge media adapter that supports
Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, and xD-Picture
cards.
A Firewire port and four high-speed USB 2.0 ports provide fast digital video, audio,
and data transfer. Toshiba also includes a fingerprint scanner near the touchpad to protect the notebook from unauthorized use. This feature requires a matching fingerprint scan to complete the boot-up process.
An Express Media Player, which provides a CD/DVD Launch feature and other control buttons, allows you to get to your music without booting the computer into Windows XP. The built-in Harman/Kardon stereo speakers join together with SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound to provide exceptional audio.
Performance
The P105-S6084 has the three elements needed for satisfying performance -- a capable
processor, plenty of fast memory, and a spacious hard drive. The heart of the notebook is a 1.66-GHz Core Duo Centrino chip that has a 2-MB L2 cache with 667-MHz Front Side Bus. The laptop is also outfitted with a generous 2 GB of RAM, upgradable to 4 GB. (continued...)
