Digital cameras have improved so much in recent years that people who have little or no photography training can create great-looking photos with relative ease.
Taking a picture and then being able to view the results on the camera's display or on a larger computer or TV screen is a huge improvement over waiting for prints to be developed.
Most people, however, simply will print their photos on a standard ink-jet printer and be satisfied with the results. But true picture buffs use dedicated photo printers.
The newest inkjet printers offer close-to-professional results for a small investment in hardware , ink cartridges, and photo paper.
Canon's iP6600D, the latest in the company's line of photo printers, not only boasts beautiful lab-quality photo prints, but also can handle full-page text and other print jobs.
Look and Feel
The first thing that strikes you about the iP6600D's design is its kiosk-like front panel. The front panel's 3.5-inch LCD is handy for previewing photos and selecting basic photo-editing and printing options.
You can use this printer away from a computer simply by inserting a memory card in the front-panel slots. In addition, compatible digital cameras can connect and print via the PictBridge port on the printer's front panel.
Measuring 16.9 x 12.3 x 7.5 inches, the printer's footprint can accommodate crowded work areas easily.
Features
Canon's iP6600D prints pictures quickly and sharply. It comes with a single-sheet tray conveniently located in the front for photo paper as well as a 150-sheet tray in the rear for all-purpose printing.
The iP6600D, like all other Canon printers, uses individual ink wells so you won't have to discard half-full cartridges when a single color runs dry.
Great color acuity is produced with six ink colors -- photo cyan, yellow, photo magenta, black, light cyan, and light magenta, plus, of course, a double-sized black cartridge.
If needed, the printer can correct red eye, sharpen images, and enhance facial lighting automatically. Or you can opt to make picture adjustments from the control panel.
Performance
I have nothing but praise for the speedy color printing. I printed two 4 x 6 inch photos in 46 seconds for one and 48 seconds for the other. Two 8 x 10 inch pictures zipped along at slightly under two minutes.
The color quality was very good. I could not detect any tell-tale signs of "banding" in the color gradients. The fine-line details looked clear and sharp. (continued...)
